the person is a heavy smoker and drinker i need as much info as i can to get her to understand how serious this is! no need for snide coments

Yes, but it's just not a wise thing to do.
Please urge them to quit or at least cut back.

If you smoke and drink, you don't really deserve to be treated.

Apart from that, your immune system will be so decimated by the treatment, that really you would want to do everything in your power to improve your health, and not damage it even further.

Of course you COULD smoke and drink, or even inject heroin every day, or play football on the motorway. That is up to the patient. But whether it is a responsible thing for a cancer patient under (VERY EXPENSIVE) treatment to do is another thing entrirely.
