This is a good question and to be honest I don't think anyone really knows as you can try to potty train a child yet they don't always grasp it when we want them to. I would suggest by experience 2-2.5 as they can understand what you are saying more. If you have a girl show her underwear she could wear if she can ask to go to the toilet without going in her nappy, make a star chart, you wll be surprised at what kids understand even if we think they don't. Let them wear underwear around the house so they can start at home where they feel safe. Even come up with a name for the toilet or even get a potty that sings when your child goes to the toilet. Show them this with water first so they grasp the concept. Goo luck.

What I have heard is that you should start potty training when a child can go between 3 and 4 hours with a dry diaper. If you start before this you are only training yourself because their bladders aren't mature enough yet. My experience in a child care centre had most children starting between 2 and 3 years.

My son is 19 months and I have been trying to potty train him for about a month and a half. When you feel your baby is ready. My son started pointing to his butt when he went potty. This may sound gross but. When he would go potty in his diaper I would take him with his diaper and show him his diaper and say this is where it goes and each time I have done that he runs to the bathroom, but he has already gone so now I just have to get him there before he goes....

GOOD LUCK

when the child shows they are ready to be potty trained.

introduce the potty at about 15 months - just have it in the room, play with it, put dolls and toys on it to make it a fun place.

some children will not use the potty straight away - my son didnt want to use it until he was just over 3 and then straight to being dry full time - with no accidents - wouldnt use potty, went to toilet and even knew how to stand up and not splash over toilet - includes No 2's too.

When my daughter started using her diaper to tote toys around.

When my son showed interest by getting up at night to go.

All and all they were both about 2.5 years and was no big deal both by 3 pretty much were trained with few accidents.

I didn't worry too much about it figuring they would get the idea sooner or later.

I did however make it easier for them by switching them to padded undies instead of diapers. For outtings outside i just put plastic over them and kept a change of clothes handy.

When they show the signs of being ready. rush them and it is stressful for all. Allow it to happen when the child is ready and life is easy for all.

when the kid says, "mommy, i seem to have wet my pants" you could probably start then.
