I'm in the market for a new car and am considering buying a Nissan Versa, which comes with CVT instead of automatic for its more equipped model. Every car I've ever had has been an automatic, as I am not able to drive manual transmission (I've tried, but no one has been patient enough to teach me.) I'm wondering if CVT has a learning curve or is it just like automatic transmission?

CVT means Constantly Variable Transmission. It is effectively a single gear that will do any speed you want it to by automatically changing its ratio - now there' real engineering for you.

A CVT always used to be (I don't know about modern ones) linked up to a centrifugal clutch (so no clutch pedal, making it exactly the same to drive as an automatic), and it works by changing the size of two pulleys joined by a belt. They've been around for a while, so there's nothing new about them.

A CVT is just like an automatic. There's no clutch. Instead of having 3,4,or 5 gears - it's got a belt that moves up or down between two pulleys. When you start off from a stop the belt is positioned on the large side of the pulley driven by the engine and the small side of the pulley which drives the wheels. As you gain speed the belt moves across the pulley. This provides a smooth continuous transition from power to speed. It gives better gas mileage and you won't feel those small lurches that most cars have when you go from one gear to the next. I have a Saturn Vue with this type of transmission. Only problem is that it is a little noisier than a normal automatic. Most are not quite as rugged as a regular automatic transmission.

The Versa with the CVT is a easy to drive car just like all automatics The sound of the engine takes a little getting used to. Some people think the trans is slipping because the engine noise to road speed but all is ok while you get over 35 Miles a Gallon.

Yes - it's just as easy as an automatic but it gets a bit better fuel economy. I have a Versa on order with CVT and i can't wait.

good sufficient that Nissan might positioned it on the Sentra, Versa, Altima and a gaggle of alternative autos of their line up. Nissans have constantly been good and that i do no longer think of they had positioned a sparkling transmission in a gaggle of their autos in the event that they did no longer assume it to final.
