Our house is only small but the kids love the 'movie room'. However once we've gone to bed all we can hear is Robocop!

Hi. I can understand your dilemma! Sound transmition from one room to another requires the walls in the movie room to be treated with special panels to stop low frequency sounds resonating through the walls.Making the entertainment room more absorbent will tame the high frequencies but will not stop low frequency energy from getting through.
Have a look at the link below .You will be able to solve your problem with these experts. Cheers.

Apart from more radical solutions the best thing to do is have the kids turn the subwoofer down after you have gone to bed. The higher frequencies won't travel throughout the house nearly as much as bass waves do.

Turn the volume down? Subtitles?
Seriously though...
Heavy curtains, thick carpet and soft couches are all sound absorbing materials.
If you're totally desperate hang curtains and carpets on all the walls and stick egg cartons behind them.
