I am so tired of reading questions answers with no capitilization, no punctuation, every other word misspelled, and completely senseless abbreviations. Now, I realize that not everyone has perfect spelling or grammar, but most of the time it seems to be just pure laziness! I'm so tired of having to translate what I'm reading into regular English, and sometimes I just have no clue what the person is saying.. It's not that much work to type something properly, so that everyone can understand it.

All right, all right, I'm not claiming to be a paragon of the English language here. I don't always spell perfectly, neither are my grammar or punctuation always perfect (I'm pretty sure no one's is). I don't even always use caps in my answers. What I'm complaing about are the entries that have NO punctuation or caps, every other word, or more sometimes misspelled, and ridiculous abbreviations, it's just one run-on, impossible-to-read sentence..

You have to understand; it seems this place is mostly overrun by 12 year olds. That's what sucks about the online world; you can't tell what you're getting into until you've already clicked on something. I think Yahoo answers should add a different color for people under 18, so that adults can talk to adults, and kids can talk to kids, if they so choose.

It bothers me beyond any explanation. I understand exactly what you are talking about because I am a strong linguist. Among learning languages, I also study how languages evolve over time and what happens to words when they get adopted from one language to another. I think that this disaster and terrible misuse of written (and spoken) language results from a significant drop in intelligence, attention span and, the spread of IM lingo. Since I mentioned before that the average intelligence had gone down, I also have to say that the people now imagine and do things according to the first stereotype that jumps out at them as soon as they begin to think. For example, let’s take the word “great.”The first thing the people think of is “gr and 8" because they have gone too far in the wrong direction to think beyond a certain threshold. Those who write “gr8" or similar, tend to go by the easiest thing to think of. After all, it is patently too complicated for some people to consider that there’s an “ea” after “gr” and not an “8.”
I absolutely hate the way my friends answer my emails, giving me an impression that they spent no more than 10 seconds writing it. Typical emails that people write to me are no more than four lines and are always full of mistakes. The shortness of their emails annoys me much more than the lack of spelling and grammar. I hate reading something that people write to me without thinking. I agree with you that it is a very big issue from the 1990's and onward.

I read a question last night that was a pretty good question, actually. I didn't answer, however, because there was not one capitalized word or one punctuation mark in the whole question. It was one gigantic, run-on sentence that took up about five lines of text. It took a bit of work to figure what the question was, but I still refused to answer this.
Are people really being taught this poorly in school? Are these adults who are doing this? I think it's really sad (and honestly, quite scary!) that things are like this. If these are teenagers/young adults, how in the hell do they expect to get a decent job (preferably a career!) if they can't even format a resume properly?? Scary scary scary...

I agree with you completely! It's irritating. I think it's partly due to the proliferation of text messaging and the goofy abbreviations inherent in that have spilled over into other forms of communication. Sometimes I'm mystified as to what the person is even trying to say!
By the way, "....questions answers" should be, I think, "questions and/or answers", and you spelled capitalization incorrectly. ;) I'll give you that, though, because the point you're making is excellent.

Hell yeah, I'm tired of it. I think the ridiculous spelling, and abbreviations are the worst for me. Grammar can be very archaic at times, so I don't blame anyone for messing up there. I'd say half of what you read is laziness, and the other half is just plain stupidity. I'm to the point now, that I'm just shooting for coherency.

i am guilty of not using caps that is because i am lazily loafing on my bed when i answer questions here. the misspelling does bother me because there is a check spelling link right at the top and there have been more than just a few questions i would like to answer with " huh" because i have no clue what the question was. i am also very guilty of bad grammer cuz i use a lot of slang.

Don't read them, problem solved! I agree it's frustrating, but on this forum you will find people on different levels of education, background, nationality, language and ages. It's best not to judge someone just because they have trouble communicating. Evaluate your reasons for answering questions, is it to help others or are you judging them?
This forum is open to the whole world, not just the select few who use 'proper' English. A little tolerance goes a long way. Skim for questions that interest you but are understandable, skip the rest. It's important to remember some of the most brilliant people in history were illiterate!

Oh, man! I'm right there with you!!!
Those people who write "waz" instead of "was" , or "wiv" instead of "with"... What is WRONG with people????
**I don't expect, or even WANT everyone to be perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. But NEVER adding ANY periods, commas, or anything to break up a sentence... Absolutely unacceptable. Misspelling words that are SIMPLE... How hard is it to spell "was" correctly? Or "later"?

Oh man, I am SOOOOOOOOO tired of it!! Some of the questions asked aren't even readable. I'm a horrible speller, but I can click on a link to use the Spellchecker!!
Grammar is the worst. I think that almost no one knows the difference between there, their and they're. Or your and you're. I'm SO tired of seeing 'Your Welcome.'
I try not to judge, I really do. But I work hard at making my posts correct and getting my ideas across. It irks me no end when some people can't be bothered to even try!
