I have a 1997 nissan sentra and the engine light turned on, Firestone said the code P0500 in the diagnostics revealed speed sensor replacement. is this a valid concern that needs to be done right away? They will charge me $158.00 for the labor and parts, is this within normal range to change speed sensors? I decided not to have them do the job just yet, the car seems to work ok so far, but I am just wary how long I should postpone the replacement. Is the speed sensors related to the cruise control features of the car, can I live without having the sensors changed? HELP!

First, symtoms of a faulty VSS, is the rpms bouncing at random, and the speedometer to drop to zero, the input VSS tells the computer how fast you are going and when to shift gears and just a little bit of information...When you put the car in drive and it seems sluggish, get the sensor...disconnect both battery cable ends and let car set over night...this might reset engine light..and then if the check engine light comes back on, with the same code...replace sensor...very easy... just two bolts & connector and easy to find...

unless your speedometer is waving to you i wouldn't worry, it is probably in your car's computer to alert a maintanence i.e make a dealership money....so forget about it until you are unable to tell what speed you're going (and even then i for one could give a sh*t) the speed sensor is an easy replacement and is generally located on the transmission, however some cars have it in the wheel's hub or spindle (wheel speed sensor)
