The average person burns about a calorie per minute just lying around. You don't burn much more at rest if you are overweight, because you don't have more muscle when you are fat. On the other hand, when you exercise, divide your weight by 150 and multiply that by what they say you will burn per minute or hour. That is affected by weight, because you are hauling stuff around. Weigh 200 pounds or weigh 150 and wear a 50-lb weighted vest: it's the same extra load on your body.

The amount of calories that you burn during this state is called your resting metabolic rate or basal metabolic rate. It depends primarily on your lean mass and thyroid function. Your lean mass can be calculated from your weight and percentage body fat.
Here is a link to estimating your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

Since you asked...You heard correct.
While you are sleeping, your body does not shut down. your heart beats, you breate, you do move.
So, if you sleep until noon, you can say "I".m exercising."

- I don't do any cooking or baking while I sleep.
and for the people that do cook while they sleep then it's no wonder they burn it. It does depend on the wait if they fail to wake up they could burn the house down . . .
