My cat’s kittens are two weeks old, there eyes are open. There mother insists for them to be in my closet. They are in a basket so they can’t get out on there own. The closet is dark even in the daytime with the door open “unless I turn on the light”, and the question is, should I turn on the light to allow the kittens eyes to adjust to light or is it ok too keep them in the dark?

ok well while there eyes may be open they may not be seeing well. mommy cat will slowly let them get used to the light i would try to interfere as little as possible. its fine with them being in the dark. but if you are really worried about it call your vet or an animal help hotline. :D

good luck with kitties!!

We forget that animals still have their natural instinct, and thought we tend to ignore it often, natural instinct is usually right on the money.

All my cats who have had kitten wanted them in dark, quiet places. It's a survival method. The mother will bring out the kitten when she feels they are ready or they will venture out when they are able. Feel free to turn on the light and visit with your kittens. The more they are handled by people when they are little, the more people friendly they will be as they grow up. Trust your momma kitty. She know's what she's doing.

I think the closet is fine for them. Their eyes will adjust when they are old enough to come out.

I hope you are handling and playing with the kittens. This will help socialize them! You need to gradually introduce them to things they will meet in their lives -- kids, dogs, litter boxes, maybe even other cats.

Have fun!!

Mama cats are very protective of their babies, so them being in a closet in a basket is not uncommon, in a week I would start acclimating them to a place outside the closet - I would not worry about Mama Cat bonding with her kitties.. Good Luck with your new litter..
