I've been going out with my girlfriend for two months and I've gotten to know her family rather well (mostly her many siblings, although I've not ignored her mother and father).

Yesterday her mother gave birth (in her house) and I was told it would be bad taste to visit my girlfriend without bringing a gift for the baby.

Clarification: I'm a college student and most of the money I make is expendable because I live with the parents still.

Thanks for all the answers so far :D :D

Yes...it probably would be in bad taste..but not to worry...wouldn't be the worst thing ever. You don't have to make it an extravagant gift..even just a plant or flowers..sometimes a little gift for both the mom and baby is even better...sometimes mom needs a little pampering too after giving birth..keep it simple! Admire you for even considering it...most guys wouldn't give it a second thought (I said most guys now...not all)

That's a tough one. Since you have only been dating for 2 months. That's not a real serious relationship. You should validate the new child. Her new sister will be a big change in your girlfriend's life now. At least get a simple 'Congratulations it's a girl' card. And if you want or can afford, buy one little outfit or a little rattle toy. Something simple. Ask your parents for suggestions. Being her boyfriend for only 2 months, I wouldn't spend more than $10-15.

It is the thought that counts. If you are not going to see the new baby you could get away with nothing, but if the baby and mom will be there then it would be bad taste. It doesn't need to be expensive and if you are really strapped even a card will do.

a sweet baby! Yes bring a gift. A baby rattle is not much money if money is tight. Better yet, bring some flowers to the mom!

I suspect you are a teen and while it would be very nice to show up with a gift (will earn you bonus points with gf and Mom), it would not be in poor taste to show up without one. If you are an adult with a job, buy the gift, cheapskate.
