Perhaps its a comfort thing similar to thumb sucking to help himself feel at ease with people.
You are probably right about the self-help porridge.
Could also be due to a limited vocabulary or a form of tourettes syndrome (involuntary utterances), born again religious thingy or some such impairment.
Ask him - then tell him to stop referring to you as friend. Prepare yourself, you will shatter his world.

It's just his way of pleasing people. It's true, addressing people's names is part of the effective communication stuff. He's trying to get around with it. Are you close enough to joke to him like, hey, it's getting annoying..stop it friend!

That's sounds as bad as people who say bro every 10 seconds.
If you really want it to stop just punch him in the mouth. That should put an end to it pretty quick.

The definition of happiness is "being content textile with one's self." It doesn't rely how a great way up the ladder-of-existence we've climbed, fairly its how we taken care of others as we make the confusing climb to the incredible.

By now it's most likely so ingrained in his speech patterns that he isn't even aware he's saying it. If you want to bring it to his attention, the best way is to ask him.
"John, can I ask you something?"
"Sure, friend."
"Why do you say 'friend' all the time?"
Wait for answer.
