My first language is Spanish and I learned to speak and write Portuguese in two years. I didn't it hard at all; All I did was work at a place that had many Portuguese speaking people, I didn't take classes or anything.

No way. If Portuguese a Spanish dialect, English is too. A dialect of German and French. Portuguese is a true language. A Latin languages as Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian and some minor languages are.
We share, at some extent, grammar and vocabulary. However the spoken languages are quite different. As a Portuguese speaker, to me is easier understand written than spoken Spanish. But it's not SO difficult. Actually, they say it's easier for Portuguese native speakers to understand Spanish rather Spanish native speakers understanding us

It is NOT a dialect of Spanish. It is a completely different language. As different as German is to English. Well, maybe not quite that different, it does have many similarities. Portuguese have an easier time understanding Spanish because all the sounds of Spanish are in portuguese but the portuguese language has different sounds that are not so identifiable to Spanish speakers and I think that is why it is harder for them to figure out what they are trying to say.

I speak Spanish and personally, I don't find Portuguese hard to understand. Obviously, it's a different language (not a dialect), so there are differences, but you can get the basic gist of what they're saying.

Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and other languages that come from Latin has the same root....
I learn Portuguese in 6 months; basically i was put in charge of a project that i was the only one that spoke Spanish and... everybody else spoke ... Portuguese...
SO .... MY SOLUTION TO THAT WAS ... I LEARN "THIS" .... OR I AM OUT OF A JOB... I had to learn.... and fast!!!! (to read and write) .
I grow up in Spain 18 years and was born of speaking Spanish parents - only- .
It was not that bad, I just really ...need it and wanted to learn the language... ;-) I had two babies to feed at home...
Try it...
good luck ;-)
