For the first couple years I was starting to race, I used to train in basic cotton t-shirts all the time. It won't make you go any slower.

Get a couple/few pair of inexpensive cycling shorts, and a jersey or two that you find attractive. If you decide to get more into cycling, go ahead and spend a few bucks for quality clothing. Good cycling clothing will last you easily over 10 years as long as you take care of them. If you spend $75 on a jersey, and it lasts ten years, you've spent $7.50 per year. Pretty cheap when you think about it.

How many you NEED versus how many you might WANT are two different questions entirely.

You only really NEED one. After a hard workout, jump in the shower with your jersey still on and use liquid body soap along with one of those nylon mesh shower scrunchy things to wash the jersey. Then take off the jersey, rinse it out, gently ring it out, and hang it up to dry while you finish with the rest of your shower. By the time you are ready for another ride, it should be dry.

Of course, a back up jersey might help in case it isn't dry the next morning, so you could maybe use two, perhaps one long sleeve and one short sleeve. Even if you decide not to wash your jerseys this way, do not put your jersey, or cycling shorts in the dryer.

It is more important to have multiple shorts, but make sure you get different styles of shorts so that the seams are not all in the exact same place.

I'd aim for 6 jerseys in case you don't want to do laundry. You won't have an excuse not to work out. I swear...this biking has doubled the laundry job.

FYI, I know fancy jerseys are the cool thing to wear, but they are extremely expensive. I found that at Target they have a Champion C9 line of athletic shirts that feature the moisture wicking technology and they are only $14 each. I've found some on the sale rack for $5. They don't have the pockets in the back, but that's what the camelbak is for.

I agree. 4 jerseys, (2 sleeveless jerseys and two standard jerseys) and definitely 4 pairs of paneled shorts! Also 4 pairs of socks and a couple of pairs of gloves. I would buy sale or closeout jerseys and shorts until you find a brand that fits your type of body. Try different brands and styles of jerseys and shorts. They all fit a little different. Some brands of jerseys are marked Large, but fit like a Medium and vice versa. Hope this helps.

i have 2 jerseys and shorts. that way i can wear one pair one day, then put those in the wash and have a fresh pair the next day. when i put those in the wash, i should have my other set cleaned already. in theory, thats how it should work. it depends on how often you do laundry. it doesnt always work perfectly for me, so if i dont go for a really intense ride one day, i'll spray my jersey down with fabreeze then wear it the next day.

remember that jerseys cost on average $50 each and shorts can be just as much or more.

Personally I suggest 5-6 bright colored jerseys, 1-2 club jerseys if your a member of one, one long sleeve jersey and one or two famous ride jerseys. I swear by these combinations and you always have CLEAN jersey at the ready. One pair of arm warmers, knee warmers, leg warmers are also a GOOD SUGGESTION as well.

If you are just beginning, I would suggest some jerseys, arm warmers, leg warmers, and a vest. With this combination, you can ride in a variety of weather conditions by adjusting the layers and warmers. Check out the clothes from Pearl Izumi. They are great lined leg and arm warmers.

That would depend on how often you do laundry.
4 jerseys and shorts if you wash them once a week.

I have 6 team kits (bib-shorts and jerseys), i do laundry once a week.

Fresh shorts are more important than jerseys though, keep them clean!

good luck
