If any furnace registers or air returns are in places where the cats could reach, they need to be removed and cleaned (or replaced) and the inside of the ducts cleaned as far as you can reach. Might be worth the investment to have the ducts professionally cleaned because the volume of cat dander and hair could be huge. While you're at it, have the furnace cleaned, too.

A lot of this depends on how much work you're willing to do. If you have a lot of money, replace as much as you can and hire the rest of the work done.
