The gospel literally means good news. The gospel of Christianity is the good news of God the Son, Jesus Christ. This good news is that God came down to earth as a man, Jesus Christ and took the punishment meant for us for our sins. For you see all have sinned and fall short of pleasing a holy God. The wages of sin is death and eternal separation from God in Hell. However when Jesus was killed on the cross He took that punishment for us. God died for you. Then three days later He rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven where he is at the right hand of the Father mediating for us. Jesus defeated death and hell when He rose from the dead. Jesus offers this same victory to us if we only believe in Him and give us eternal life. Because Christ lives those who believe in Him as Lord and savior will also live. Jesus Christ is the only way to the Holy God, all we have to do is tell God we have sinned against Him, be willing to repent of sin, and accept Jesus Christ into our heart as our Lord and savior. When one accepts Christ they are given the Holy Spirit and are sealed by God for salvation. The Holy Spirit also guides us in our life so we may live it for the glory of God. So in a nutshell the gospel is Christ, being sinless, died for our sins and rose again so that through Him we may not be judged for our sins but have eternal life. To get more of an understanding start reading the Bible starting with the Gospel of John in the New Testament. Peace be with you.

Great question Mike. I asked "what is salvation" and was very saddened by the responses.
The gospel is that the Lord, Yahsua, Christ Jesus died so that we might live. His death was the blood sacrifice that is required for the remission of sin. The Lamb that is sacrificed has to be perfect, without spot or blemish. He was that Lamb.
All we have to do is believe in our hearts that He was that sacrifice and confess it with our mouths.
Today He sits at the right hand of the father and is ready, willing, and able to wash our sins away. We only need to ask.

but Marks always seemed to differ.

1 Corinthians 15:1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
It's the good news that Jesus is the promised Messiah who came to save us from our sins.

The good news, that even though we are sinners, having broken God's Moral Law, and we all deserve to be punished in Hell. But because God loves us so much He became a man, Jesus Christ, lived a perfect sinless life to become the perfect sacrifice for sin, by dying on the cross, and 3 days later he rose again, and all we gotta do to partake in the grace and mercy shown in that great sacrifice is repent of our sins (that is to confess them and forsake them, never do them again) and put our faith in Christ alone.

That Jesus is the Christ, and we have salvation through him if we only trust him. The Good News demonstrates that we who trust in God can have peace with him, and that we can have everlasting life with him, death is nothing, only a passing state of being, and we can hope for our life to be neverending by the GRACE of God!
