The elliptical is better on your shins and knees and hips and ankles. Also, because you are also using your arms on the elliptical you burn more calories. So the elliptical would be the better choice. I have an elliptical and I love it. I use it quite frequently while I watch TV. It's really quiet and it's fun too.

Shiloh (cool name choice) -

About your question, both are going to do the trick. There are a few different reasons for chosing one over the other, but calorie burning isn't one of the reasons. Considerations would be, space, price, which do you enjoy more, and then also joint considerations.

People that choose to work out on an elliptical machine choose to do it because it is easier on your joints. A treadmill is going to have more impact on your knees and ankles, but it is still much kinder than the pavement. An elliptical machine has no impact, it is a fluid motion.

Losing weight is all about calories in and energy out. Cardio workouts are the best for weight loss because you will have a sustained period of time where your heart rate is increased. This is what burns the calories. I would say to base your decision on the things I listed above, but also try to determine which machine will allow you to have a sustained intense workout. If the eliptical machine is too easy then you won't be getting an adequate workout and you won't lose weight. On the flip side the elliptical may have different resistance settings that allow you to alter your workout more.

Have you ever worked out on one at a gym? Which do you prefer? The worst thing you can do is buy an expensive piece of equipment and realize that you don't enjoy it so you quit.

Lastly, there are a million people out there that have bought treadmills and elliptical machines and quit using them. They often end up at garage sales and goodwill stores. My father-in-law purchased a universal gym for $150 from a second hand store that would retial new for over $1,500. If I were you I would look into it. I typically don't buy from second hand stores, but workout equipment seems impersonla enough I would be ok with it. After all the ones at the gym have been used by thousands of people anyway...

Good luck in your decision.

I have read in multiple fitness magazines that buying a treadmill is the way to go as it has been reported that of all types of exercise equipment treadmills are the ones kept and used. I have had my treadmill for over 10 years and although I use it on and off sometimes I am always glad to take a walk. Today I ran and can tell you that it is a great way to lose some lbs. Maybe go to a gym and see which one you like more. Also consider buying some hand weights to help tone your muscle. Having more muscle helps burn more calories. GOOD LUCK!

I personally use the elliptical over the treadmill. I tend to burn more and also its low impact on the joints which provides a safer workout. Some ellipticals also come with incline and speed functions so just do some studying Good luck :)

I personally burn more calories and keep a faster heart rate on an eliptical.
