or is it looked upon as being weak?

The older generation appreciates it more. I did a simple experiment for a college course. I held the door open at a shopping mall for 50 women-25 who appeared older(40+) and 25 who were younger. All the older women appreciated the gesture. Most of the younger women couldn't care less, yelled at me that they could do it themselves, and some even cursed me. Only 7 of them even said thanks. Same thing happens when you offer a woman a seat on the bus. It got so bad with younger women I stopped offering. Maybe they think you're trying to hit on them instead of accepting a simple courtesy graciously. Just my opinion.

No! I definitely don't see it as being weak! I definitely appreciate help from kind-hearted men. Often I can't do it alone... eg, pregnant with two little kids catching a train and I can't get the pram folded up... or some nice people give me their seat. Or I'm holding a baby and trying to open a door.

Even when I was single I appreciated a smile and a kindly gesture, such as opening the door and letting me go first. I DO see it as a sign of respect. A woman would have to be daft to assume that a man opened a door for them because he assumed that he was superior to her! If he really felt superior, wouldn't he push past her and go first himself?

Being a gentleman is gooooood. :)

Greatly appreciated!!!
My husband is a complete gentleman and the last thing he is looked at is being weak--mentally or physically.

Yes, it is. Sometimes it can seem like it's unnessasary attention, but that's only if you're in a situation where you and the lady are the only ones present, then she may be nervous. Otherwise, girls like it. It shows that you are curteous, friendly, and aren't afraid to be nice. It's so refreshing to meet true gentlemen. So to answer your question, it is still VERY appreciated, especially since gentlemen are hard to find these days.

Totally appreciated! I love it when I go to England and the men actually are very helpful and courteous... just because. I never had to tote my luggage anywhere because some nice gentleman would say, "can I help you miss?" and immediately assist me. That's just one of many examples and that is part of the reason I love going back to that country. Chivalry still lives there. It's even more fabulous when an American guy acts that way because it's less expected and therefore more appreciated.

Gentlemen are definitely appreciated!
Other guys should learn a thing or two from them.

I appreciate it beyond words! It's a shame that there are so very few "true" gentlemen left in this world. So sad.

By me it's appreciated. Weak? If someone thinks being a gentleman is a sign of weakness, they're not worth knowing.
Good manners always manner with the people that count..

I am a very strong, independant woman, somewhat of a feminist when it comes to equal rights and such, but I have to tell you, when a man holds a door open for me, or helps me on with my coat, I find it very endearing and sweet. Never be embarassed by something your parents taught you was important.

Woman say they prefer a gentleman, but let's be sincere - nice guys finish last.

I have a friend who's often curt and offensive, yet in my group of friends, he's the one that gets the most attention from women. He's so popular it makes me sick.
