The difference is in the storage media.

Analog can only use streaming magnetic tape, the visual and audio waveforms are recorded as varying strength of magnetic field. This is similar to Audio Cassette recording except a rotating head is used to increase the head to tape speed.

Digital records differently. The first storage media for digital was streaming tape called miniDV. This records not the relative strength of a waveform, but magnetic pulses that can be interpreted as on-off bits or binary data. Digital can now be compressed with greater efficiency so that a Hard Drive, DVD burner or even Flash Card can be used instead of the streaming tape.

If we take the Sony 138 and 260 as example.

The 138 is hi 8 handicam. The 260 is didigal 8 handicam.

The ONLY difference between them is the primary chip that makes the video wave.

The 138 takes the signal from the sensor and converts it to a full wave form that gets recorded on the tape as 3 distinct elements

Monchrome video (Luma or Y) takes up most of the tape

A small track is used for the sync signal with the color (choma or C) modulated (heterodyne or color under)

And a thrid track for mono sound.

In teh 260 a different chip takes the sensor image, samples it, makes a map of like color areas, givesa color depth, looks for changes in the image from one frame to the next and throws away redudant image information.

This then converts the signal into three monochrom renderings that are partial images and represent tones of color.

This is then combined with digital wave recording in stereo for sound.

This is then recorded on tape as a data stream of numbers.

Digital is about 40 percent brighter and sharper then analog! and of course your audio is also a lot better in digital also!

Thanks,

Analog video cameras record onto film, or videotape, and cannot be transfered onto a computer(well, you can, but it's very costly, and it really brings to quality down.)

Digital cameras record onto DV(Digital Video) or MiniDV tapes, and connect, to a computer with a USB, or FireWire cable, so that it can be edited.
