"Slideshow for your desktop" would be, hmmm... not sure. Do you mean a screensaver slideshow? That's part of the system by default. It's limited, though.

Look in your Pictures folder to see what's there. If it is iPhoto Library, you have two choices. You can setup the Screensaver preference pane to use all the photos in that iPhoto Library. You can't select which of the photos will be in the slideshow. It's all or nothing. To activate the Pictures folder as a screensaver slideshow, open System Preferences, select Screensaver. In the Screen Effects tab, choose "Pictures folder". That does it.

are you on a mac? which OS?
Are you wanting it to play on pc as well as mac?
or just on your mac?
images placed into iMovie will when rendered, play as a slide show.
