I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota with a V8, 5.2L, 318 engine..I recently took it up to North Carolina from my home state Florida in march...I have 185K miles on it..Now I have NEVER had a problem with this truck, only a fuel pump and water pump..but that is regular maintance..But now..my truck doesnt want to shift on time..I am very intuned w my cars, I know at what RPM it shifts and what speed. But all of a sudden its sluggish around corners, its like it just hit a big gust of wind! it feels like i hit the brakes!! I get pushed forward all of a sudden then it shifts again! and the turn is not that big! and I only do it around 30mph..and also..it used to HAUL ***!! but now its like "oh..you want me to go?" and its soo aggravating..I want to change the trani fluid but im scared that if i do..all the gunk that is holdin it all to gether will come out and then for sure it will crap out on me! WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?? I took 4yrs of Auto in H.S. but I kinda slept through the chapter on Trani's..

It very well could be a problem with the fuel pump again. My car did the same thing a few weeks ago. Going around corners it would lose power. I found that i was losing fuel pressure and replaced the pump, have not had a problem since.

Sounds like it could be a bad vacuum modulator or slipping clutches in the trans. The vacuum modulator regulates the shift points of the trans by a valve connected to a diaphram inside the modulator and it operates based on engine vacuum via a vacuum line running up to the intake manifold....try replacing it first. The modulator is a simple bolt-on device to the trans and the diaphram inside of it can be worn out or perforated from gas fumes over time. It's usually bolted on the passenger side of the trans and looks about the size of a tuna can with a large vacuum line or hose going up to the engine....see photo http://www.users.bigpond.com/matthewv/vacuumtn.JPG
It could also be that the trans valve body is just gummed up from the high mileage causing it to not shift properly..... you would need to have the fluid flushed out including the torque converter fluid and replaced. I wouldn't be too worried about the gunk not sealing anymore but the best thing to do is drop the pan and see how much friction material is in the bottom of it...that will indicate to a trans tech how worn out the friction plates are.
Hope this helps, Paul

my 97 ram 1500 was doing the same thing - i took it in to be checked and what they told me was that is happening because there's a ball stop in the torque converter that's getting stuck in the fluid transfer casing and it could lead to a complete trans rebuild if not cought soon enough - in my case it had already screwed up both drive bands and burnt up the filter from lack of circulation and overheating - i would let a pro do it because if they screw it up it's all on them - that's the purpose of getting the warrenty - it will cost about $2200.00 for a complete rebuild of the trans but it's worth it if you want to keep your truck .

Change the fluid and filter and do a band adjustment. That should do it but if not you probably need a rebuild.
