GERDIE,
WHEN AN OLD CAP FALLS OUT, A DENTIST WILL VERIFY THAT IT IS IN SOUND SHAPE, THEN AN X-RAY WILL CONFIRM THAT YOUR TOOTH IS GOOD SHAPE TO STILL HOLD THE CROWN.
IF EVERYTHING GOES WELL, THEN THE DENTIST CAN RE-CEMENT IT BACK IN PLACE.

Most likely put it back on. I've had several crown fall off, and he'd just clean off the old cement (as in adhesive) and use the same or stronger cement.

Best ones are screw-and-post, but those are usually done only after a root canal.

My dentist will always put in something temporary until the new piece is built. Don't be afraid to go in, the longer you wait, the worse it gets. Get it fixed asap.
