Sometimes when people ask my opinion about certain things, I tell a white lie.
Someone may ask, "What do you think about my haircut?"
I say, "It is so cute!"
But I am thinking: "It looks like it could be a nest for an ostrich."
Or someone may ask: "Why don't boys ask me out?"
I say, "Because they don't know the real you!"
I think: "Because you whine too much about not being asked out."
Of course, if I said that latter statement aloud, I probably would lose a friend.
Should I be brutally honest, or lie all the time? I feel fake when I say things I don't mean.

I totally know how you feel. My advice is to be honest to your really good friends and be polite to others. But I can genuinely say that one of the Ten Commandments isn't, "Thou shalt be honest at all times". I know that for a fact.

If telling the truth would hurt them, and there is nothing to be gained by it, then the white lie is better. In your examples, telling your friend her haircut sucks would do nothing but make her totally self-conscious until she could grow it out or get a new do, and what good would that be? None - so the lie is appropriate. If she said, "How do you like my new chin piercing?", you would tell her the truth, because she could change it.

Same thing with the asking out question. She obviously isn't going to change, so what would come of telling the truth? You could, however, turn that around and say, "Why do you they don't?" and see what she says. That gives you a better opening if you really need to have that discussion.

White lies are sometimes appropriate if the only reason to tell the truth is to make yourself feel better.

A white lie is still a lie and the truth is the most likely the best thing you could do even if you get in trouble or hurt somebody.

If the truth is going to hurt someone badly, I guess a white lie is the next best thing.
