My water bill has almost doubled since she moved home and she runs the hot water out, so I have to wait to shower.
No small feat since our water heater is 50 gallons.
How can I get her to knock it off. She is costing me a fortune and I have told her to quit, but she has ear plugs or something because she is still doing it.
Should I turn the water heater down? Will that do any good?

We like to refer to it as the "1/2 hour power shower" at my house. My daughter is 19, too! Dear Lord, is it contagious? lol. I have found that if you turn on several other faucets in the house to hot at full blast, it makes for a very hasty retreat from the shower! Don't worry, you don't have to turn on every one! One or two will do nicely. Good luck and here's to lower water bills!!!

lol my nephew started doing this when he was 15 and he's 17 now he showers until there is no hot water left. You can keep telling her to stop but she wont. She is 19 if she has a job ask her to pay a percentage of the water bill. If there are 4 ppl living in the home ask her to pay 25% of the bill. If you dont want to do that not much you can do. If you want to turn the water heater down go for it but I think that only controls how hot the water gets doesnt make the water get colder sooner

So, turn the water heater ALL the way down! Even with a fifty gallon water heater, that should run it out rather quick. If that does not work, why don't you make her PAY the water bill. Even if she does not have a job, hand it to her and tell her she can take over the dishes and lawn, maybe the vacuuming and mopping, every day to compensate you for the extra $ that she is costing you for the water bill! Sometimes you just have to put your foot down in other ways than, just telling her! Good Luck

Maybe she's spoiled or something. You need to be firm and make her pay the water bill. I used to take long showers when I was living with my mother and I had to pay $50 a month for the water bill. that will help her cut down. and make her wait until you take a shower first, then her hot water will run out fast 2!!!

warn her that unless she can help with the cost of water and heating it, that she needs to limit her time in the shower. if she continues to take long showers, give her a time limit. when her time is almost up, give her a 2 minute warning. if she is still in the shower after that, go to the hot water heater and turn off the main tap at the top that goes to the whole house (should feel hot). make sure you turn off the right one!!! after doing this a couple of times she will either start paying you, or she will shorten her showers!!!

good luck!!

Go the the tap nearest the hot water heater and turn the hot water on full speed. You will waste as much water the first time, but you will get your point across. I would simple say it will happen every shower three minutes in. Tell her to speed up, pay up or toughen up.

You can shut off the valve that allows the hot water to come out of the tank after a certain amount of time.

If you don't want a terrible fight, you should let her know that you will do this, and be sure to set a clock or something to a two minute reminder so that she will get un-soaped in time.

Well first of all I want to know why you posted this question in pre-school and toddelrs category.

My hubby takes ultra long showers, but I don't care, at leats he takes showers, many people I know don't shower for days, to save water. Which if you ask me is on a par with not flushing the toilet to save water... its WRONG.

But anyway, if it is becoming a problem with the water bill, switch to solar hot water.
