all the responses are good. make sure you get doggy tooth paste. also, i recommend getting the toothbrush that is more like a thimble than a brush. it is a rubber cap that fits over your finger and has some bristles on the end. it is MUCH easier than the actual brush kind - you have more control.

I actually just started to brush my dogs teeth recently. i went to our pet store and they sold it in a combo pack where you get the toothbrush and the toothpaste, & it was only $7. You apply a small amount on the bristles, lift their mouth open and with a little bit of force just brush their teeth back and forth. You don't have to do it as long as you would your own teeth, but you do have to do it every day. And also the toothbrushes are dishwasher safe. The toothpaste is a special toothpaste that has a "meat flavor" for dogs. Mine still don't like it very much... but at least I know they wont get gum disease!

Same way you brush your own. Just use toothpaste made for dogs.
You should brush them daily if you can..if not, at least 3 or 4 days a week.
Also..if your dogs teeth have alot of plaque on them, you should have a cleaning done by the vet before you start brushing.

At Petco or Petsmart, you can get a dog toothbrush and toothpaste. The toothbrush is made for brusing a dogs teeth, so the head of the toothbrush is positioned differently than if you were to get a human toothbrush. You'll find it a lot easier.

I don't brush my dogs teeth as much as I SHOULD, but he actually LOVES the flavor of the poultry flavored doggie toothpaste.

I would add to these answers about what to use....

Be sure to have a calm demeanor. If you are nervous the dog will be nervous. At first you might just offer him the paste on the brush as if it were a treat. Praise your dog or speak to him in a soothing voice as you do whenever you are happy with your dog.

Do not chase your dog down or force him to undergo the brushing if he is resistant. Be patient and gentle and he will become accustomed to it.

You can use a doggie toothbrush from your pet shop.
If you have a small, young dog, you may not have too much trouble. Older dogs you will have to be persistent and patient.
You can get dog biscuits that help clean teeth and special toys that massage the gums and reduce tarter.
Now you have many choices, ask your vet for what might work for your dog.

The same way you brush your teeth. Although I would suggest using special toothpaste and brushes that they sell in pet stores. Most pets won't like getting their teeth brushed at first, but they get used to it.

I put dog toothpaste on his toothbrush and then let him lick it to see that he likes the taste. Once he licks it and sees that he likes it he will let me brush.
