I'm planning a trip to Germany in October, and I'm flying out of Boston. I've narrowed my flight choices down to two: a direct flight on Lufthansa, and a one-layover flight on Icelandair, connecting in Reykjavik. The Lufthansa is on a Boeing 747 but is $160 more expensive than the Icelandair option, which is on two Boeing 757's. Has anyone flown on both, and if so, can you give me your opinion on the airlines in general, and on the comfort, etc. if the planes? Thanks.

I would go with Icelandair. Changing planes in Iceland is not bad - if you're not going nonstop that's the next best thing. (By the way nonstop and direct aren't the same thing). The 757's are a little more cramped than Lufthansa's 747 but it's not terrible. Besides you have the stopover to break up the trip. It's a good airline - and Lufthansa is somewhat better although not a lot so it's not worth the extra cost. The good thing about Icelandair (besides getting to say you were in Iceland) is that they time their flights arriving from the US and their departures to the rest of Europe so your connection will go smoothly. I'd go with that option.

I have flown Icelandair from London to Reykjavik and found them to be very good.

If they are offering an overnight stop over (or even a few hours) in Iceland, it is well worth taking the longish trip into Reykjavik as it is a fascinating place.

Good luck and enjoy the trip.

They are both fine planes and I would recomend the Icelandair. 757s are more modern and if it costs less, go for it. 747s are bigger, but that does not mean more comfortable. They are probably similar. It might be nice to have a break to strech your legs anyway though.

I've never done Lufthansa, but I love Icelandair.
