I'm getting ready to go to Japan for two months and while I've been on long flights before, I'm really nervous about this one because it's so long. I've kind of developed a fear of flying and obviously being afraid to crash and get hurt or killed. What can I do when the day comes to fly to not have a panic attack?

OK, make sure you get plenty of exercise and eat healthy foods before you go. The exercise will give you endorphins, and the good food will help balance your body chemistry.

Get an eyemask, which will help you to block things out. Bring something to occupy you, like a GREAT book (especially a comfort book that you love) or some puzzles or sudoku or even a Nintendo DS (I like the Animal Forest game.)

Pack a lunch with some comfort foods, like yogurt. Also have a lot of water on hand.

When you are in the air, refuse to think about bad stuff. Just imagine yourself pushing those thoughts away. Flying is still the safest form of transportation!

You might talk to your doctor about a mild sedative to help get you through, if you are really worried. But I think it's better to not have it -- walk around the cabin, drink lots of liquids (ask for some lemon with your water, too), and chat with the other passengers about FUN stuff, if they are in the mood.

I wasn't afraid of flying, but the more I do it, the more I worry. These are things I do to take my mind off of it. Oh, and think about all the fun you will have in Japan! It's worth the trip!

Remember that only a tiny persentage of flights have ever crashed in comparison to how many have been flown, and most of those were when airplanes were not as safe as they are now. I have never crashed and in one trip alone there were 32 take-offs. And anyway, even if a miracle of bad luck happened and you crashed, it would not be too bad. There are lifeboats and air masks on all planes as well as trained personel. With so many electronics nowdays, you would be fine, and rescued soon. Try to read a book and relax, you are in safe hands.

you could do a few things:
1.take deep breaths they really help and as you are breathing tell yourself that you are going to be fine and nothing will happen
2. you could ask for a cold drink and drink it slowly with the same thoughts goin through ur head
3. maybe if this helps get a aisle seat this way you dont feel confided and will be less likly to get a panic attack

Ask your Dr for an anti-anxiety drug. It'll calm you down & help you sleep.
