You have to live "in" the world. But you don't have to be "of" the world means you don't have to do the things the world does. You don't have to drink, and smoke and do drugs and party and have out of marriage sex. You can be what God has called us each to be and still survive in the world. I do it daily. Doesn't mean I think im' better than anyone else, I will be the first to admit that I am FAR FAR FAR from that. And i'm not perfect. But I do live a good life and help people all that I possibly can and serve God with all I have.

Hi Ryan,

We all live "in" the world. We have to go to work or school and we must interact with other humans on a daily basis. Not being "of" the world means you don't have to accept what everyone else seems to think the norm is. You do not have to accept that lying, cheating or stealing are ok. You do not have to accept that foul language is "normal". It basically means trying to live your life guided by God. It's not always easy and some will make fun and try to rile you up. But it really is a wonderful way of living and the rewards are excellent and sometimes very surprising!

What a great question. The first thing that came to my mind is living worthily to have the Holy Spirit be with you and that way you are living in the world but not of the world!

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Not living of the world. Of course we have to eat, pay bills, taxes, be among those who are not saved. For example the things we thought were funny before we were saved shouldn't be funny after we are saved. It's not bad to watch television but to watch pornography is different. I hope these examples gave you some insight.

Well, judging by the behavior of some of the more fanatical adherents of that idea, trashing the world with pollution and being utterly heedless of the long-term destruction and poisoning of the world seems to be a good start. Trying to believe in a boatload of magical superstitions (miracles) while somehow functioning in an utterly non-magical world would be another.

Read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. His book explains exactly that.

Many other people have the same message, but you might find his the easiest explanation.

Living in the world is easy. You can't stop yourself from doing that. Being not of the world is equally as easy, and in fact you are doing it right now, but you may not fully realize it.

A book like the one I mentioned will help you realize a sense of self not of the world.

Ryan, following Jesus's message and the writings of the Apostles is where you will find that answer.

There is a spirit of the God of this world and there is the Holy Spirit. They are enemies. The spirit of this age, Satan, has many things to trip you up.

But, God is pretty clear: follow Jesus.

3 steps:
1. Listen to what Jesus says.
2. Do it.
3. Encourage others to do the same.

In my life this has been more of a fact then a how to. It is an observation of the facts of the Christian experience. If you were an Atheist and went to a church fellowship you would be in a church but not of the church.

Hope that helps.
May the Lord richly bless you.
