Motel 6 has several motels in the Bakersfield area. They're basic but fine for spending the night. There are about 4 of them in the area, all charging under $40 year-round. I've stayed in 2 of them without any problems.

Last summer, I stayed at a cheap ($40) but passable motel in Buttonwillow, which is over near I-5 It was the one closest to the freeway... not right in Bakersfield, but on the periphery. There were a bunch of motels/motor inns in a row. I don't know if that helps, but that's the best I could do.

"Cheap" is a relative term. Most of the major motel chains will have competitively priced room rates. Depending on amenities offered, a price range would be $40 - $80. Enjoy your stay.
