Can a kite nylon string cause a chopper to crash? A chopper just crashed and investigators said it was caused by a kite string which got ravelled up on the rotor when the chopper snagged it in mid-air. I have doubts.

It can and it has caused a helicopter to make an emergency landing. I saw a photo a few years back (1995 maybe) a bell 47 was flying low over a beach and got caught up in a nylon fishing line some one was using for kite string. The line wrapped around the main rotor mast the pilot could no longer control the helicopter and had to put down on the beach. One picture was a close up of the rotor mast with the string around it, what a mess. Luckily no one was hurt but the helicopter main rotor control was history.

I would have my doubts to. most of the stuff on a chopper is controlled by hydraulics witch could easily brake a string. the blades can take a shot from a 50cal.
I say no a nylon string can not take a chopper down.

how would a nylon string any were close to the main mast, it would get blow away. if the helicopter was below the kite it would cut the string and blow it away. the nylon string it picked up most likely picked it up on the way down, a close line, the report said that they had engine trouble at 400ft that's high for a kite in the middle of a town. the helicopter all so hit power cables on the way down

string did not cause the crash it was just some thing it picked up on the way down, most like the same for the other crash.

so the helicopter comes down hit a house lost the blades and picked up the string after that

Don't know about choppers, but a Cessna Twin was downed in CA by flying into a high flying kite string. The aircraft was low on approach to an airport when the accident occurred.
Go to http://www.ntsb.gov/ and look up the accident report, since you seem to know when it took place.
