My 11 month old dachshund, started, hacking after eating and drinking. Then that stopped and she would dry heave. Then a few days later vomited bile. Went to vet many times. Did x-rays, (showed swollen stomach lining nothing else) Said was gastritis. blood tests, perfect. Changed food to I/D and was on antibiotics as precaution, then pepcid (for dogs) and something to coat intestines. Went away. Then was spayed 2 weeks ago. All okay. Now she started the little cough again. (sounds like she is clearing throat) She was on multi-advantage and now revolution and her stool tested in December. Don't think its worms. I live in Canada, very cold in winter, no mosquitos for past 7 months. She eats well, has tons of energy, poop is fine, everything. One vet said it was bad gastritis, the second opinion was the one that changed her food and gave her meds for tummy.I don't know what else to do. She will have her ball in mouth, and do a little cough/gag. Sometimes, just when doing nothing. any idea

Yes still on I/D but not pepcid. Does not vomit anymore, not for a long time. Just the cough/gag. Only one little one at a time, like clearing her throat. Like when a cat has hair balls only dogs don't get them...

Can allergies do that, food allergies I mean?? The main ingredient in all food she has eaten is..corn. Why would she cough/gag if allergic to something?

First thing to do is take a breath and relax. OK. now that you've done that the second thing to do is take a look at all the facts from a different point of view. You said that other than the little bit of cough after she was spayed and when she plays with her ball. You also said that all the other indications like her energy level and the consistency of her poop were normal. She may have had a bit of a cold or have allergies. Or it could be that she has a tender mouth and gags easy. As long as she is acting eating and pooping fine All should be well. I have two large breed dogs one is a collie Shepard and the other a English mastiff they both have their issues but as long as they are acting normal i try not to worry about the little stuff.

I'm very knowledgeable about dachshunds. They often cough and hack after eating or drinking water. Nothing to worry about, they just get a little water or food at the top of their wind pipe. Doesn't last for more than 30 seconds. The dry heave thing I can only offer is that it doesn't happen after eating or it actually vomit. If it is happening during the day it might be "collapsed trachea syndrome". This is not dry heaving but the dog is making a honking sound because the dog is trying to get its breath. Last for 10 to 30 seconds. The vomiting bile isn't unusual. Actually it isn't bile but the yellow foamy mucus that lines the stomach. This can happen in dachshunds who are only fed once a day. They do this when their stomach has been empty for more than 12 hours. What many people do is to feed some veggies, peas, carrots, string beans opposite their normal feeding. That is if you feed in the morning then feed veggies in the evening. Why veggies? Because they will not cause your dog to gain any weigh which is crucial with dachshunds.

Dogs sometimes eat grass and cough but then throw it all up. That's normal. But a cough isn't. If one vet doesn't give you a reasonable answer and the cure doesn't work, try another vet. Check for kennel cough. It's just like doctors, some are better at some things and some are better at others. At least that's a nice way to put it. It can be something fairly simple or something as serious as heart disease. You need more testing. I hope your puppy gets better.

Him not telling anybody his plans or business is not a big deal. Pick your B A T T L E S sweetie! It's going to be almost impossible to go from married to each other to boyfriend and girlfriend who sleep together. You two should have taken it slower and became friends again (alot of talking on the phone then some dating without sex) Know you are paranoid and scared of him returning to his old ways. It takes so much to heal over a divorce and to put yourself through that again is going to be alot. I suggest you be still and not nag or complain about him going home. I wish you could find a way to become friends again withOUT any sex. He has a place and should stay there. You are messing up your fresh start when you have intimacy involved. If your not going to eliminate the sex and sleeping over, then you should find ways to be friends. (calm down, laugh, talk, etc.) YOU should not allow yourself to keep going up to 10 and then dropped to 0. You should take control of your emotions and keep your expectations of things getting where they should be in the middle at a 5 then either way your safe. Don't get too excited or too down. He may regret how he handled his marriage and do everything in his power to straighten up or he may not. That's a 5 mentallity. Give your self BALANCE especially since you can't control whatever he decides to do anyway. You can only decide how much YOU will, expect, forgive, deal etc. If he is tryingggg then lay off the nagging/drama/crying/begging/questioning... his every move because you've lost the trust in his commitment. When you take a person back, you have to find a way to forgive, began to rebuild your trust (which may take a while but doesn't give you the right to nagg him since you took him back, when you take someone back, it means you either forgave or are working on forgiving) and enjoy the relationship and life. Sleeping over was not a good idea when reconciling! Best Wishes!!

Is she still on the I/D diet and the pepcid? I had a dog that had to stay on this his whole life or he had gastric problems. He lived to be over 16 though. We couldn't feed him anything else at all because he had such a sensitive tummy. If she isn't vomiting and seems to feel well and your vet isn't concerned, this may just be a trait of hers. She could have had some minor damage to her windpipe at some point or something that triggers the coughing at times. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your poor puppy! Dogs do cough, so maybe it's nothing. It seems as though you have already done everything I would have suggested you to do. Wait it out a little, and see how she does. If the coughing stays there, or gets worse ,see a vet. Maybe switch vets, because it looks like they vet you have now has done everything they can, and new vets have new ideas.
I hope your dog feels much better, and I wish I could have helped more!

Have you ask your vet if there is such a thing as doggie bronchitis? It sound like some humans I know that will get a tickle in their throat and just can't stop coughing until they almost, if not, vomit. Doggie cough syrup? Is there a common ingredient in the food that your doggie may be allergic to?

All very frustrating when the vets can't figure it out. Try and see if you can establish a pattern of when the symptoms occur and continue to work with the vet. Perhaps going to a veterinary teaching hospital may be a choice - they have many specialists there and they may be able to dig a little deeper for answers. Expensive and may involve travel, but if it's a serious problem and the regular vets can't figure it out, it's probably your best choice.

Agree with MistyR. Our vet told us that dogs can be allergic to corn. Our schnauzers were having dry patches on their backs. We switched to rice-based dog food, and although they turned their spoiled little noses up to it for a few days, they're fine now, and their skin cleared up. I don't know if an allergy to corn can cause other problems besides skin, like ours, but you should ask about it. Good luck.

Look into her mouth and check for any obious obstrictions. Daschunds eat more than their tummies can handle, thats for sure!
Check the size of your dog's kibble or food and see if maybe it is too chunky for her. could you break up the food into small bits? Maybe she is bolting down her food. I suggest feeding in smaller amounts more often every day.
If the problem persists, try a different vet.
