Yes, facials do work. I would recommend that you get one a few days before your big event.
A facial doesn't hurt at all (at least mine don't (I usually fall asleep).
You should get one with that change of every season at the minimum (so 4 a year), One a month would be ideal.
I need to clear up a miconception about facials. If you get more than 1 facial every 10 days to 2 weeks you run the risk of overstimulating your skin and then your skin will dry out or you can get breakouts.
The cost depends on what type of facial you are looking to get. the salon that I work at charges between $35.00 - $85.00 (Canadian) depending on what facial our clients would like.
I would recommend that you go down to the spa and set up a consultation with the esthetician to discuss your skin type and facial options. Usually the consultation is free (it is at my spa)
I personally love facials, it makes my skin glow, and I look radiant for weeks after.

I would try to schedule the appointment atleast 10 days before your big event. Facials don't necessarily cause breakouts but they can surface blemishes that would be coming up in a few days all at once. Also if you happen to have a reaction to any of the products used you'll want time to recover before your event. You might want to ask the esthetician about blackheads, extractions can be painful (the only part of the facial that would be) and usually leave you pinkish aftewards. hope this helps

Save your money, here's a 20 minute facial, that would seem you spend the whole day in a salon.First blend a half of a red apple,20 green grapes, 5 strawberries, and 6 ozs of pure orange juice. Blend all ingredients until liquid.Next apply pure honey to your face ,then cheesecloth over the honey, then brush on the above ingredients .Leave on for 20 minutes, and relax,Then wash off with warm water.

If you have a good, experienced technician - a facial is really helpful. (Look for # of years of experience & ask for recommendations.)
Cost can range between $50-$100+ depending on the type of facial & area.
A good facial shouldn't hurt.

BTW, Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask is good for blackheads. It has clay & benzoyl peroxide. Don't use it in conjunction w/ steam facial though. It might be too harsh.
Their Blackhead Eliminating Treatment Mask has gotten good reviews but I haven't used it yet.

doing it for a few days in a row is a good idea and if you have a cosmetology school around you they do a great job and are well priced the worst that could happen is you get a bit of mask in a nostril but no they don't hurt and at a school at most they are$20

They cost alot, but they do work. But, you have to have it on for about 3 days (1 each day for 3 days). It all depends on how much time you have for this special event.

Facials are wobderful.. they leave your skin feeling so refreshed. and no they do not hurt and they typically run about $50. The thing is if you have sensitive skin you mya have a problem with more breakouts less than trying to prevent them with a facial.
