I was thinking of buying one at a second hand store. (traders mart) I asked the man there and he said they dont have software with the cameras. Is it needed? thank you for the kind responses..

No, you don't need the software..
download a freeware program called Picasa2..

And you're set to go...

google has given this program to us free

First of all, very good new digital cameras are so inexpensive that I wouldn't bother with a used one. A Fuji F20 is just over $100 and produces excellent photos. Many others are available for under $150. Check out www.dpreview.com for reviews on all digital cameras.

And to answer your question, no, you don't need software to use the camera if (and I suggest this), you get a USB card reader (about $12).

You insert the camera memory card into the card reader and it simply looks like another hard drive on the pc. Windows includes viewing software.

If it's a Genius, Sony, Epson, or that crappy brand cameras that are detected as removable disks in My Computer, doesn't need the drivers neither the software, but if it's a good brand like Canon, Konica Minolta, Nikon, etc., they really need the software and drivers to work properly.
