in terms of people who speak it and territories where it is spoken. I mean to be honest SPANISH is only spoken in the western hemispheres and Spain that it. While French is spoken all over the world. They say that there are 320 million native spanish speakers in the world and probably 400 million combining native and non-native. While in French there are 80 million native speakers but combining native and non-native there are 500 million.

Spanish will probably be more useful these days in America definitely.

French doesn't have much bounce beyond its borders anymore. It's spoken in a lot of African countries still, but unless you plan on going there a lot, not too useful.

But what do you mean by important? If you mean as far as business opportunities, Spanish without a doubt. Your numbers are off, there are far more Spanish speakers than there are French in the world today. There are not 420 million non-native fluent French speakers in the world.

French used to be the language of diplomacy and international affairs, but it's been pretty much entirely replaced by English in that regard.

French may be the most spoken language today. However, on other topics it has been noted that the French speaking countries (Esp. Europeans) have not been reproducing themselves ( only 1&1/2 children per family) . Whereas countries like South America, Central America, Mexico, U.S.A. (Hispanic Population - increasing rapidly), and Spain are multiplying rapidly. In the near future Spanish speaking people will GREATLY out number those speaking French.

No language is more important than another; especially just because many more people speak it. What about all of these 'small languages" in the world, such as the language I've learned, Vlax-Romani? Most poeple don't know anything about it or smaller languages and figure they aren't important. I think that as long as at least two people use it to communicate, it is an important language. 80 million people who rely on communicating in French think that their speech is very important. Language is a part of a culture, an important one.

Well, Spanish is spoken in all South American countries, Spain, as well as the US. French is spoken in a few African countries, Canada, and France, of course. Personally, I think Spanish is more important, but that's just me =D
