I don't want anything like "what's your name?" or any other basic question but something that would really make them think.

Sorry i should have added that i can talk to him just fine, we just do this thing where we ask each other questions and im drawn a blank and can't think of any we have already spoken about what he likes, dislikes, goals. I just was think you guys could help me out.

ask about if they won a lotto or a large sum of money, what would they'll. you can tell their personality by the answer you'll recieve.
where would go for vacation. here is another one, it seems harmless, but again. the answer would tell what type of a person he is.

well like you said whats your name is a basic question, try asking this person what his interests are and what his goals are in life, what he likes to do for fun that kind of stuff. something to start up a conversation and it should go from there...

we cant tell you what to ask --- the best thing to do is be genuinely interested in getting to know them better --- they will see that and respond --- let the conversation flow --- having a script is not a good idea --- it may seem to be helpful BUT it comes across as stilted and fake
