I own a shop, and can tell you this; I would bet it is the CV Joint making the noise. Look to see if the boot on it isn't cracked and/or has lost the grease out of it. I would think if it were the hub making the noise, it should do it all the time. If it only does it in a strain, then it has to be either the CV Joint/Joints, or the differential fluid may need changing. They will do this if the (fluid) oil in it has broken down, and lost its properties to allow the unit to slip the clutches in a turn so the wheels turn the same speed. They use a special oil made for limited slip differentials, and you can get this at most good parts stores. It's kind of expensive, but it will make it go away, if there is no damage internally with the differential. Another thing that will do this is; If you went four wheeling, and it somehow got water in the differential through the vent tube, it would do that exact thing. If its not the CV making the noise, have the differential cleaned, and add the correct oil, and it should be good as new.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

sounds like the front axle joint is damaged or either the front differential has internal damage...When is the last time you had it serviced.....before going to a repair shop...drain the fluid from the front diff, and then pull the pan... check the magnet for metal fibers...if big deposits..diff is shot, and if fluid smells burnt..and thick...it wasn't serviced...or either some of the seals are leaking and it went low in fluid...good luck..

I would check the grease in it. I dont know if it is the same but i had a 1989 Bronco 2 that did the same thing and it was because there was not enough grease in it.

It's not the bearing - it's the cv- or u-joint.
