If you use the scientology episode as part of the debate, keep in mind South Park doesn't regard scientology as a religion so I don't think it would count in this regard. But if you are a strong believer, go for it :)

I think that South Park shows quite realistically the issues on both sides, not just in regard to religion, but to any topic they cover. I don't think they have the intention to be blasphemous at all - they call it like it is, and like they see it. (I don't regard Scientology as a religion either, but it wasn't SP that made me think that.) It points out the obvious, like the Mormon episode. My personal favorite, by the way. The whole Joseph Smith story is kinda ridiculous. They went over the top with it, but it outlined his story very well. They poked fun at it, because some of what he believed and taught was pretty silly. However, at the end of the show, the little Mormon boy basically says hey, this works for me and my family, yeah it's kinda stupid, and we know it is, but who are you to judge me? People don't generally believe this, because of the way they present things in the show, but SP in my opinion is very tolerant. They have both sides equally represented, good and bad.
See also the recent St Peter the Rabbit episode, the Museum of Tolerance episode, and several others. Great show - I never miss it.

I think it puts things very bluntly, and forces everyone to see religion from a whole new angle. I'm sure the episode of the bleeding Mary statue seemed blashemous to the more devout believers, but they probably don't watch South Park anyway. I also thought the "Catholic Love Boat" episode was funny.
