mp4 files can be played in QuickTime for Windows, without your having to go get codecs. RealPlayer also plays them, as do several others, like WinAmp. It's just easier to install QuickTime Player - less fiddling around, and you can also use it to play .mov files.
Basically, if you have Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player, and Real One Player, you'll be all set for most things.

The only reason Windows media player can't play the file is that you don't have the right codec. All you have to do is download and install a free codec pack like K-lite.

Go and find the codec for media player or get VLC. VLC kicks itunes, media player, quicktime, winamp (video), realplayer, and ANY other media players *** I have seen. It has its OWN codecs (No need to add on, and add on, and get more codecs) and can play anything but realmedia files (I use media player classic only for that)
