Qin Shi Huang conquered all opposing states and unified China in 221 BC, establishing the Qin Dynasty. Intending to impose centralized rule and prevent the resurgence of feudal lords, he ordered the destruction of the wall sections that divided his empire along the former state borders. To protect the empire against intrusions by the Xiongnu people from the north, he ordered the building of a new wall that connects the remaining fortifications along the empire's new northern frontier.

I hope that I am interpreting this correctly as it is in the China section.
If you are referring to the Great Wall of China it was built to protect China's border.
Protecting the people within the wall from the invading Mongolians, and protecting the tea and silk routes for the continuing economy of the country.
It will be more helpful to people trying to answer your question(s) if you indicate the subject of the question.
Have a good night.

If you are speaking about the great wall of China, it was built to keep spies and mongolians out. There were spies because of the secret silk making and trading i believe. It also helped defend China against enemy armies.

It was built to keep out invaders and warring nations (like Atilla the Hun). And it was deemed impenetrable. How was the wall finally breached? Simple, the invaders bribed the guards who then opened the gates.
