Because the existing government is a staunch ally of "Israel" since 1949,and the Israelis pay plenty for their support. Free democracy would result in an Islamic government, probably like iran's - which wouldn't be to Israel's liking at all. Turkey was bought by the jews a long time before you were born and it would take a revolution to get it back.

I am Turkish and I live in Turkey and I shocked. Because You said 4 times an islamic goverment was elected. You know wrong. Two Islamic Party Leader became Prime Minister. First Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan of Refah Party Leader was a islamic wiew party leader. His goverment is a coalition. His party didn't get eneuoh vote to establish government. And Second Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of AK Party. His Party had % 34 votes in 2002 election. Turkey is going to a new election. I think AK Party will lose a lot of votes.
Turkisp people doesnt want an islamic governence. There is a economic depression in Turkey. Turkish People try all kind of parties to find a solution for economic crissis. % 90of Population like laic system.
If yo say democracy means majority controls everything. Minoraty doesn't have any rights. %34 majoratiy will disseise % 66 minoraty. Your idea looks like The Socıal Contract Or (Prıncıples Of Polıtıcal Rıght) by Jean Jacques Rousseau. Rousseau says in this book. Majoraty has evry rights. But it isin't democray it is a dictatorship.
And Turkish nation is soldier nation. Turks all time lived as an army. Turkish Army is strongest and honourable establishment in Turkey. Every Turk men have to duty as a soldier in army. When a soldier died his family says our son died for saving our country and he will go heaven. All Turks believe this belief.

I am grateful Turkey has a secular Army defending it. The secular Army has helped bring Turkey a level of civlization, development, equality and individual freedom that no citizen of an Islamist state will ever enjoy and every Islamist would take from the people if he could. Islam rejects Democracy except when it can be used to gain power, and then Democracy becomes the opportunity to force the people to choose among the throwbacks the Mullahs have approved. A secular dictatorship will almost certainly always be preferable to a religous tyranny.

I agree. If the majority want a religious govt, they should get it.... but only if one rule of democracy applies - that the people still retain their power to vote the government out again (in case of corruption or abuse of power).
Is democracy something that can be upheld under Islamic law? I think it can be - "there is no compulsion in religion." A democratically elected Islamic government would have a religious responsibility (from Muhammed, pbuh) to uphold the right of people of other faiths to practice their own religions (while also adhering to the Islamic laws of the land).
You can see historically that this has usually not been done by Islamic regimes, and there is always the danger that fundamentalists would begin to abuse their power, and ignore the more peaceful passages of the Quran and Hadith.

Yes I do ! And now I want YOU to tell me which Church or Religious Institution you can name which has EVER been Democratic.
The two most divisive subjects on this Earth are - Religion AND Politics. I pray to (a non-existent God) that we NEVER allow Religion and Politics to mix together. The result would be catastrophic.
Democracy is government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people. It is NOT government of the people by ANY group of religious fanatics hell-bent on converting everyone else to their way of thinking, so they can have an "Islamic State" or similar.
Keep Religion and Politics separate.

Yes, and it's why I believe "Islam" and "democracy" should never be used in the same sentence without a negative particle. The only way to keep it from happening is by abandoning the democratic process. On the other hand, how can we even start to reconcile equal rights and protection for all citizens given how Islam treats the infidel (or a member of a condemned variation of Islam)? In either case, Islam will destroy democracy.

Actually the court system annulled the vote, not the military. Here's why:
"The Constitutional Court ruled Tuesday that there were not enough legislators present during the first round of voting on Friday, and canceled the round. The opposition had boycotted the vote, depriving the ruling party of a quorum of two-thirds of lawmakers in the 550-seat Parliament."
That sounds like proper parliamentary procedure. The same thing goes on in the West.

Maybe the army is correct. Historically, Islamic Governments have ignored true democracy.
Personally, I think Politics and 'any' religion is a poisonous mixture..it has always been.

What I find strange about the whole thing is Palin said it where it would have never been heard if it wasn't for the media and the media is condemning her for it and Obama said it with 52 million people watching and the media hasn't said a thing about it.

If by Islamic government you mean that minorities and other religions should be eliminated or prohibited, then that is not democracy either, it is theocracy.
If Turkish people living abroad insist on practicing their faith in peace, then why prohibit native Turks of other religions from practicing their faith at home, also in peace?
