Is it true that members of the nation of Islam have to "wipe" with their left hand? If so why?

I do not know if it is true that they 'have to' but I know it is custom in many countries (especially third world countries). They use the left hand because most people use their right hand for things like writing, shaking hands, etc. and they need to keep it clean.
