The concept of the end times began with the writtings of the ancient prophets of Isreal. These writing have acurately foretold the rise and fall of the Greek , Babalonian, Roman, empires, the reestablishment of Isreal as a nation in1948. The details of the holocoust were laid out with such detail that the very words of the Jews in the concentration camps were prerecorded. The present state of the city of Babylon, and it the destruction of any efforts to restore it, is recorded in history. The present information age, was predicted in the new testament by the apostole Paul.
The establishment of the european union was forseen on both old and new testaments, well as it's destruction.
All the events in history have been in line with what was written in the bible including the first coming of Christ, and his resurrection. The Bible has laid out human history before it ever unfolded.
This is much different than y2k, which was based on fear, while the end times is based on something that has been a hundred percent acturate the writing of the ancient prophets, and the Holy Apostole's of Jesus Christ

No. A lot more people considered Y2K. It was always talked about in the media. Only a small unimportant minority believes that "the end times are coming". The rest of the civilized world knows that no such thing will happen.

Y2K came about because computer sales were slumping.
It was actually a great marketing technique.
Scare everyone into believing they need it.
Note:
If a computer is so accurate, why does a $1.99 watch keep better time?

Yes and both are BS. Y2K was nonsense and there was never anything to it. It was supported by companies who made millions in hardware/software upgrades. It was a scam nothing more, but many fell for it. “End Times” is utter nonsense preached by losers with extremely low IQs.

It's the Y0K, the Y1K, the Y2K the Y2.5K and all of the other Y_Ks.
And they all come and go without anything happening.

It's most likely paranoid nonsense. People are always predicting the end or misinterperting things. It's been happening since waaaay before our time.
Sort of like how the whole "2012" thing is sadly misinterperted and then passed around by idiots who then continue to spread the wrong info.

Look up Matthew 24 and read through it. the end does come and first all false religion will be done away with. then according to Matthew 24:22 there will be a great tribulation in which those faithful to god shall prove themselves.

interesting question squirrel
irregardless of whether or not anyone believes it to be a true phenomenon, you might be on to something there - worth exploring don't you think?
My guess is there will be several theses (is that a word?) and or dissertations on the subject within the next few years.
blessings :)
