A question for the ages!!!!
Inner peace is attainable!
Knowing this, humans rarely have the patience to stay on the
necessary path long enough to experience the fruits of their labor.
Inner patience is gained by developing firm and unshakable faith, that there Creator (God) is sufficient for all of their needs, both internal and external.
The path to inner peace is a very difficult path to follow, because of all the hurdles that lay in waiting for the student.
First quiet the mind. This in itself is a huge hurdle.
Develop a regimented prayer life and stay with it. Don't waiver from it.
Getting discouraged is normal, but you must be determined that you will succeed.
This a life long journey, not a temporary quick fix.
Thru time you will find the qualities of the inner heart will change. Patience will enter your life and you will experience a New You surfacing from the Old Self. This change in your life is what is known as contentment. Content with what ever is thrown at you in life, both positive and negative.
Prayer and Worship is what will sustain you.
Avoid, finding faults with others, and you will find renewed
faith, that only you will be able to experience. You will not be able to share it with others through words. Others will be able
to see it in you, and will question you as to what you have done in your life to become so alive.
May Gods Grace & Peace be with you

What is peace? It is not a goal to be achieved? Is it a thing to be sustained? Is it the absence of conflict; a relative condition? My answer is that peace is a gift found in the person and presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. I sustain it by staying mindful of his presence with me.
He gives it and he sustains it. While it is his doing, there were some adjustments that I had to be led through to both achieve and sustain. One was some revelation about my own feelings and the other was meditation and study, from an Eastern viewpoint, which gave me the ability to stand back and become an objective observer of my own thought process.
These changes or corrections, and the indwelling of Christ Jesus, have made all the difference. Having his presence and a peace that passes understanding, is my great help. It does, however, separate one from people who are involved with being involved. I see no problem with that. Even doing Yoga requires some separation.
There are two areas where we need peace, one above the shoulders and one below. Above is mental confusion and below a painful empty hunger, lonelyness and for me the terrible ache of homesickness. I have peace above and below.
A wonderful old hymn goes: "My soul in sad exile was out on lifes sea, so burdened by sin and distressed; when I heard a sweet voice, saying make me your choice; and I entered the haven of rest. I've anchored my soul in the haven of rest. I'll sail the wide seas no more. The tempest may sweep or the wild stormy deep. In Jesus I'm safe evermore."
The haven of rest is my Lord. He is my peace. He sustains both his peace and he sustains me.

Zen Buddhism is a very fascinating path, and it has helped me on my journey. Read 'Three Pillars of Zen' for reference, but better yet - go to a local Zen monastery - they will likely have meditation classes you can participate in as well as dharma talks, where they discuss actual Zen philosophy - which is in itself very simple. There is only the one (call it source, mind, consciousness, god, buddha, what have you - the one is beyond names and concepts). 'You' as a person is simply an illusion. Therefore, to try and 'achieve' inner peace is meaningless. There is nothing to achieve my friend, because you, I, the entire Universe and every molecule in it is one thing, experiencing itself in a trillion variations. Through meditation you can help yourself have this understanding at a deep level such that it reverbrates throughout all layers of your life - this is sometimes refered to as enlightenment - though of course that is also only a concept, a word, a thought - and as such, an illusion. Once you see past the illusion that is the 'reality' we live in, you will achieve inner peace - except of course there will be no 'you' to experience that peace, there will be only the one, as has been since the beginning of time and will be until its end. Hope this helped!

By ceasing criticism and condemnation of anything and anybody, especially myself. By finding and being aware of and having gratitude for all the wonderful things in my life and this world.
People will say that isn't realistic and there is a lot of negative in the world. That might be true, but your question was about finding inner peace and sustaining it and thats all I want. I don't concern myself with being right, or smart, intelligent. Along with inner peace comes health, happiness and success. What more could one want?

I find meditation very helpful in bringing in the inner peace. Seeing things as they are and accepting them could be another step. Knowing that everything else changes, except the 'change'. Knowing that no one is perfect and failure always doesn't mean that life should be full of miseries. Life is not bed of roses. Counting the blessings. Being grateful for all the wonderful things that we have in our lives.....Gosh, the list is endless.
If you are seriously thinking about how to attain inner peace, you will find a way, like a thirsty man finds a river.

I have, but it is hard to sustain. It's something I'm working on. I usually achieve inner peace by meditation, especially outdoors, but it's hard to hold onto it when things go wrong.

It's a work in progress but I've found Buddhism's path works the best for me. As long as I can keep in mind the basics of how and why things are the way I'm perceiving them and remind myself to remain patient, altruistic and compassionate I sustain it.

Since you are a catholic you would not understand, but I will try. Jesus message was that the kingdom of God is inside all of us. That refers to the Spirit of truth. Listening to and following the Spirit of truth is not possible when trying to follow the bible or what we think of as christianity. The Spirit of truth knows where the inspired scriptures are, what they mean, and how best to apply them to our lives. If you have never tried to communicate with your inner Spirit just ask for guidance and you will receive it.
