For those who speak in tongues, it is regarded as a spiritual language that is related to a closer, more intuned walk with God. While I don't speak in tongues and I have a different interpretation for tongues mentioned in the Bible than those do who speak in tongues, I have been to churches that practice this and understand why they do it. For me though, if people are distracted and uncomfortable because they are hearing tongues, then the focus is no longer on God, but rather on the way it sounds to hear someone speaking that way. In that case, tongues should not be spoken because they are distracting others away from God.
