It just proves the bible isn't literally true. Why does a well known scientific fact freak some people out so much?

Because a lot of people have staked a lot on the Bible being literally true.

Thank you! I agree. I've been saying this for a while -- there are more spiritual, philosophical, and religious choices out there than just the two extremes of Fundamentalist Christian and Complete Atheist. You don't have to choose between those two. There are a lot of ways to think.

And Science and Religion do not have to be in conflict!

I kind of agree with you.

The Catholic Church does not take the stories of creation in the Bible literally. Catholics believe the book of Genesis tells religious truth and not necessarily historical fact.

One of the religious truths is that God created everything and declared all was good.

Catholics can believe in the theory of evolution. Or not. The Church does not require belief in evolution.

On August 12, 1950 Pope Pius XII said in his encyclical Humani generis:

The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Here is the complete encyclical: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xii/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xii_enc_12081950_humani-generis_en.html

The Church supports science in the discovery of God's creation. At this time, the theory of evolution is the most logical scientific explanation. However tomorrow someone may come up with a better idea.

As long as we believe that God started the whole thing, both the Bible and modern science can live in harmony.

With love in Christ.

You may be correct but I am not capable of making that judgement any more than you are capable of it.

As to scientific fact....how can anyone be certain of anything that science says? As they learn more, they change their facts to fit the newest evidence. I don't argue with their methods...that is how we move forward..but you have to admit that science is not exactly " perfect" in all that they have said over the centuries. I would rather stake my eternal life on something that has not changed. My God.

They automatically think that scientists are trying to disprove god. which is NOT true. They want to cling to their beliefs that the bible is the word of god. that's why they get so defensive. most christians have moved on and grown up and evolution doesn't bother them or make them defensive about their faith.

Well your right in some ways, evolution in a way is true. BUt theres a difference between macro evolution, and macro evolution. Macro evolution being one species transforming into a COMPLETLY different species, and having some reeeallly really freaky mutations. Such as two eyes, or even two arms, it woudve been mutation to cause things like that. Where as micro evolution is like how all the different types of cats and dogs we have. Genesis 6:19 - 20 (KJV) 19And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. 20Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
See, two of every SORT. So if you had say one thype of cat, that cat couldve micro evolved into all the different cats we have today. Or if there was one dog, say a wolf, and that has now micro evolved into great danes, spaniels and things like that. So it doesnt really prove theres no God, just shows He's really cool :)

Because the bible being proven even slightly false makes it all false since there are statements in the book that say it is the end all be all of knowledge and life.

Well, it DOES show that there was no Adam and Eve. No A + E means no original sin. No original sin means one less way to scare people into Christianity.
