I would give a gift of $50-$100 if you can afford it. It's a beautiful once in a life time event so why not.

A beautiful Jesus plaque or statue with a boy making Holy Communion, a Bible, Rosary, or Holy Font are great too.

Just decide, but the best gift you can give is instructing him in the Catholic Faith--priceless.

When I made my First Communion way back in the 60s, I received cards with $. I would say $10 is probably o.k. To an 8 year old $10 may be a lot of money.

If you want to get something else, you can go to a religious store and maybe get a rosary or something like that. My guess is that the kid won't use it very much.

Gift cards are o.k., too. Probably in the same denomination.

Family usually give money, or a religious item., or some of both. A children's bible, and some cash, like that.
I know what I would have wanted as an 8-year old. A card that said you are so great for making your 1st communion, here is a gift certificate to your favorite store, and turn me loose to buy whatever I wanted. Better yet, put the kid in the car, tell him how much he has to spend at his favorite store, and take him for an ice cream cone after. He will love you forever, either way. Music, toy, book, department store, whever you, his Mom, and he decide.
I would go $20-$25, if he lives nearby, and you see him frequently. More, if you want to, and can afford it.

If you are not comfortable giving him money, give him a gift card for a book store so he reads over the summer.
