Hey what's that white line on the outer edge of a highway? Isn't it called a fog line? I'm not sure why I think this other than maybe it's visible in heavy fog and is a good way to stay on the road when visibility is lessened by a fog. Anyone know for sure?

It marks the legal limit of the road surface. It's sometimes called a "fog line" but that's not it's true purpose.
