Ok, here's the deal. I’m about to go to boot camp with the marines in June. I have like 3k to spend and I have an interest in older cars. so here comes the problem, I want a car that I could have fun to work on and to be a car I can somewhat easily fix up myself cause I’m not as skill yet and cause I don’t have much time in the corp to do so. So what do you think is the best car to start with?

Look for something prior to 1965 before the introduction of smog controls and equipment. The engines on these cars are simple and straightforward to work on, and you can get to any part of the engine easily! You should be able to buy a classic in reasonable condition for $3K.

Avoid anything after 1973. The early emissions control systems were a maze of tubes and valves. Later computer controlled engines often required computer modules that are impossible to get or very expensive. You'll have more fun with an early car and it will be very driveable and easy to work on. An early Baracuda would be my choice.

Find an old mustang with a 289 in it. The amount of after-market parts is incredible. Look in the right places, and you can almost build a new engine for under $1,000. Plus, mustangs are freakin' sweet.

Old CJ series Jeeps (look like wranglers) are about as simple as they come and there is plenty of documentation on how to take them apart and rebuild them. Also, parts are cheap and available everywhere.
