LMAO....Who is this supposed history major wayde, who posted an absurd answer to this question? He doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. The British outfought, outproduced and outgeneraled the Germans in the Battle of Britain and hence caused the cancellation of Operation Sea Lion. No match for the Luftwaffe? You're an idiot! The US didn't save Britain and weren't even in the war when the BoB was fought. As for the German navy, in 1940 the British had the largest navy in the world which dwarfed anything the Germans had. Where did you go to school? You can thank Churchill that YOU'RE NOT SPEAKING GERMAN. If Britain had capitulated and the Germans invaded the island and took control of the British navy, they would have gained control of the oceans and the US would have been completely isolated. There would not have even been an invasion of Western Europe. Plus the fact that the Germans were already losing before the US even entered the war in Europe. You sound like a Hollywood Historian. Churchill was one of the greatest leaders in history!

"Winnie" was an excellent motivator and an outstanding orator. He didn't believe in defeat, and he had such a thick skin that even during the darkest days of the war, he could still push through with hard decisions. It took real courage to be a leader in those days.

Conversely, "Winnie" also meddled too much in everything from arms production to troop deployments. He would constantly harass his military leadership out in the field to where they absolutely hated him (Montgomery was able to get him to shut up). "Winnie" also had some crazy ideas in his day (i.e. Gallipoli) that are pretty big black marks on his record.

But everyone loves a winner, and that's what Winnie was. However, he was a bit too crazy for anything other than as a war leader, which is once the Second World War ended, the British people promptly sacked him and his Tory Party and put Clement Attlee and the Labour Party in his place.

Your inclusion of the word "opinion" displays intelligence. Since the word "leader" is subjective, the question requires the reader to not only define leadership but to also address the query simultaneously. Winston Churchill in my opinion was a great leader because of his ability to orate the right speech at the right time. I'm not a Giuliani fan but he gained much popularity nationwide for his ability to hold it together and say the right things after 9/11. Clinton and Reagan also had this talent as did JFK. All are viewed as great leaders despite how you feel about them personally.

He had guts when his predecessor was a limp fish. I think Hitler would have won WWII without Churchill rallying the United Kingdom to fight for self preservation and freedom. He's just as great as FDR was in the United States.
