Eventually you will. If you are flying into Mexico you already need one. The vehicle rules are changing in the future, but have not yet.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Having just travelled to Tijuana a month ago, I can tell you this, all you do is drive across the border, no one stops you, no one talks to you, you just go. It's coming back in where you'll need the passport (unless the Mexican authorities change things by 2008).

No, you do not need a passport travelling between Canada/US/Mexico by land. A valid US drivers license will suffice.

If you are travelling by sea or air, yes you do need a passport.

As of January 2008, all border checkpoints will demand a passport.

That being said, it is recommendable to bring your passport if you have one.

I live in san diego and I travel every few weeks to tijuana with my drivers license.

confident. As of January 1st, 2007 all U.S. voters could desire to have a valid passports to flow into Mexico, Canada, and the Virgin Islands. in case you do not have passport i could practice ASAP. because it takes 6 to eight weeks to get carry of. till a hurry order is placed. Rush orders take 2 weeks and require you to pay for the expedited provider.
