Home measures such a tooth brushing and feeding teeth cleaning food such as biscuits are preventative measures.

Once a lot of tartar has built up on your dog's teeth, brushing and hard biscuits cannot remove this. It needs to be professionally scaled off by a vet, under anaesthesia. More than likely, your dog will need some extractions too - the smell is probably infected and/or rotten teeth under that tartar.

Once this problem has been sorted out, you can then take measures to prevent it needing to be done again.

Dental work is common for older cats and dogs, and sometimes younger ones too. It is very necesary - tooth decay can lead to organ failure as the bacteria travels through the blood to other organs. Is there a particular reason you're reluctant to go to the vet?

There are some things you can do. First buy rawhide or other types of bones or hard things your dog can chew on. Next buy a toothbrush and pet toothpaste from a pet store and brush your dogs teeth. She probably won't like it at first, but she will get used to it.

Raw knucklebones from the butcher work wonders. My dogs are on a raw diet and have nice clean teeth, even my 12 year old husky/Rottie mix.

BRUSH HER TEETH!!!
Take a toothbrush and dip it in baking powder (NOT SODA) and scrub her teeth. Toothpaste is not suggested because they swallow it and the chemicals are not made for dogs.
