My cat MAY be diagnosed with bone cancer more than likely - before cats die, do they often switch places in which they sleep? My cat now sleeps behind the couch or under the computer desk, its scaring me, is this normal behavior? Did it just get bored of the other spots? I don't want my cat to die..

Yes. Hiding, avoiding people and places they used to enjoy, and becoming remote and aloof are ominous signs in a cat.

However they do not necesarily mean the cat is dying, only that it knows it is very sick and vulnerable. I work at an animal hospital, and any time an owner calls and says the cat is hiding or has recently started sleeping in odd places, usually in small dark places, we treat it as an urgent matter and have them bring the cat in that day.

I hope things turn out okay for your cat. Please post an update and let us know.

my cat switches place very often, it's just where is comfortable with them. Although when she got sick she was hiding under the bed, and sat in the window sleeping all day, she would also sit in a little corner of the room as long as no one bothered her. Kitty may be in pain or just uncomfortable, to know if its actually painging her you should see a vet. My kitty though, has many spots, on a closet shelf - in the bathtub .. and new and unusual places everyday. I know from many people telling me, that usually when cats are ready to die they usually know and try to run away. I've heard this from quite a few people who've had cats for a long time. Hope kitty is ok, good luck

I've heard that this can be a sign that the end is near, but then again, as others have said, he/she may have just discovered another neat place to sleep.
Keeping in close contact with the Vet will help you to understand what your little one is going through.
I feel for you, for I know what it's like to lose a beloved pet. I just had my 17 year old Siamese put to sleep. I held her, wrapped in a quilt, until the end and then some......one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Even so, I would never let her suffer, to ease my own pain. I will never regret that the last thing she heard was my voice and the music from "Out of Africa"
and the last person she saw was me, the one who loved her, all of her life.

I just brought my 17 year old cat to the veterinarian to be euthanized today. I noticed that in the last few days, she has been seeking out another place to sleep, other than my bed. This cat of mine is a true lover. She always wants to cuddle and will never forgo sleeping next to someone for anything. And I noticed that in the last few days prior, I've had to hunt her down every day. My mother says that when they are close to death, and they feel it, they look for a private, peaceful and comfortable place to rest, away from anyone, any drafts, noise or unecessary movements, hoping to ease the burden their deaths will cause on their loved ones. Another selfless sacrifice based on unconditional love.

I don't think this really sounds like a sign of imminent death. Cats may hide themselves away to die, but I don't think changing a sleep pattern is the same thing - a sign of discomfort probably, but not necessarily death.

If you do feel death is imminent for your cat, euthanasia really is a good option. The cat gets to go to sleep peacefully and painlessly before they really start to suffer, and you can be with him if you like.

Hope this all works out for the best,
Chalice

My cat died a year ago from old age. She was 16 years old and we think she had a stroke and died slowly. She just quit eating. My husband and I made her comfortable as possible. The cat did go place she did not normally go so you might want to keep an eye on your cat. I am so sorry for you and your cat. Our pets are a part of the family. It is like losing a loved one.
Praying for YOU.

I have a 8 year old cat who does nothing but sleep. She oftens finds new places to hide expecially if the grand babies are here. we have found her sleeping in the strangest places she also needs her sleeping spots all the time.(including my back if it's in her space). I hope all turns out well for you and your cat but where she sleeps should not worry you she just feels save there thats all.

Sounds like your cat was very fond of you and just wanted to be near you before he passed. Cat's tend to do different things when they are ill or dying. Some may want constant attention and meow for someone to be near them, others might go into their own little hiding space.

They become very anti social in order to hide their pain. Is Your cat getting any pain meds?
Why don't You put Your cat to sleep, Hon. It would be best for it, to not let it suffer.
